Scope

What does technical SEO include?

Technical SEO includes 8 areas: crawling and internal links, indexing, rendering, page speed and Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, redirects and canonical tags, XML sitemaps and robots.txt, and structured data. Each area decides whether search engines reach, store and understand a page.

Technical SEO is the part of search engine optimization that works on a site's infrastructure rather than its words. Googlebot, Google's web crawler, fetches pages by following links (crawling), renders them the way a browser does, and stores the ones it chooses in its index (indexing). A page that fails any of those 3 steps never reaches a results page.

Eight technical SEO areas: the symptom, the report where it shows and the typical fix.
AreaWhat you seeWhere it showsTypical fix
Crawling and internal linksPages missing from a crawl; orphan pagesSite crawl; Search Console Crawl statsAdd internal links; repair broken links
Indexing"Crawled – currently not indexed" or "Discovered – currently not indexed"Search Console Page indexingConsolidate thin pages; fix canonicals; update sitemap
RenderingMain content missing from the rendered HTMLURL Inspection → View crawled pageServer-render main content
Speed and Core Web Vitals"Core Web Vitals assessment: Failed"PageSpeed Insights; Search Console Core Web VitalsCompress images; cut JavaScript; reserve layout space
Mobile usabilityOverflowing layouts; small tap targetsLighthouse; real phonesResponsive CSS fixes
Redirects and canonical tags404s after a redesign; duplicate URLsSearch Console "Not found (404)"; "Duplicate without user-selected canonical"301 redirect map; canonical tags
XML sitemaps and robots.txtBlocked pages; stale sitemapSearch Console Sitemaps and robots.txt reportClean sitemap; correct Disallow rules
Structured dataMissing or invalid markupRich Results Test; Schema Markup ValidatorJSON-LD in templates

A canonical tag names the preferred URL among duplicates; a 301 redirect sends visitors and crawlers permanently from an old URL to a new one; robots.txt is the file that tells crawlers which paths to skip. Every sprint starts from a website and profile audit that ranks the issues by impact, so the fix budget goes to the pages that earn traffic.

Process

What does a technical SEO specialist do?

A technical SEO specialist crawls the site, reads Google Search Console reports and finds the issues blocking crawling, indexing or speed. The specialist ranks those issues by traffic impact, fixes them in the CMS, theme or server, then validates each fix in Search Console.

  1. Days 1–2Crawl and baseline

Full crawl, Search Console export, PageSpeed field data.

  2. Day 3Prioritization

Issues ranked by pages and traffic affected; you approve the list.

  3. Days 4–9Fixes

Changes made in your CMS, theme or server, logged one by one.

  4. Day 10Validation

Search Console 'Validate fix' started; report delivered with before/after screenshots.

You receive the fixed issues and a validation report with before and after screenshots for each one.

Price

How much does a technical SEO audit cost?

$349 buys the fixed-price SEO audit at Kansas City SEO Pros, including the full technical review. Fixes run as a technical SEO sprint from $750, priced by page count and platform after the audit.

The sprint price scales with site size: a 20-page service site and a 2,000-product store need different amounts of fixing. The written quote follows the audit, so the price rests on a counted issue list rather than a guess.

SEO audit $349 one-time; technical SEO fix sprint from $750; monthly plans from $299 a month.

Speed

How do you fix Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are fixed one metric at a time: LCP under 2.5 seconds by compressing and preloading the main image, INP under 200 milliseconds by splitting long JavaScript tasks, and CLS under 0.1 by reserving space for images and embeds.

Core Web Vitals are Google's 3 page-experience metrics. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) times the largest visible element, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) times the response to taps and clicks, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) scores how much the layout jumps while loading.

Google counts a page as passing when all 3 metrics meet the target at the 75th percentile of page loads (web.dev): LCP 2.5 seconds or less, INP 200 milliseconds or less, CLS 0.1 or less.
MetricMeasuresGoodCommon fix
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)Loading of the largest visible element≤ 2.5 sCompress and preload the hero image
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)Response to taps and clicks≤ 200 msSplit long JavaScript tasks; remove unused scripts
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)Visual stability≤ 0.1Set image dimensions; reserve space for embeds

Indexing

Why is my website not indexed by Google?

A website goes unindexed for 6 common reasons: a noindex tag, a robots.txt block, server errors, duplicate pages pointing elsewhere, a new site Google has not crawled yet, or pages Google crawled and chose to skip. Search Console's Page indexing report names each reason.

  • Noindex tag
  • robots.txt block
  • Server errors (5xx)
  • Duplicate pages canonicalized to another URL
  • New site not yet crawled
  • Crawled pages Google chose not to index

Google states: "You should not expect all URLs on your site to be indexed, only the canonical pages." A healthy report still lists excluded URLs; the fix targets service pages and money pages that belong in the index and are missing from it. Crawl budget, the number of URLs Googlebot fetches in a period, limits sites with 10,000 or more pages, not a 30-page service site.

Stores with filters and variants create thousands of duplicate URLs; that work belongs to online store SEO.

Structured data

Is schema markup technical SEO?

Yes. Schema markup is structured data, written in JSON-LD, that labels a page's business, services, products and questions for search engines. Adding, validating and maintaining it belongs to technical SEO because the code lives in site templates, not in visible copy.

Schema.org is the shared vocabulary behind structured data, and JSON-LD is the script format Google recommends for it. A small-business site needs 4 types:

  • Organization: the business name, logo and profiles.
  • LocalBusiness: address, phone, hours and service area.
  • Service: each service and its price.
  • Product: each product, price and stock status on a store.

Small business

Is technical SEO important for a small business?

Yes. A page Google cannot crawl or index earns no rankings, map-pack support or AI citations, whatever its content says. Small sites break in predictable places: slow themes, plugin conflicts, redirects lost in redesigns and noindex tags left on after launch.

Kansas City SEO Pros fixes and configures existing sites on WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Squarespace, Wix and Webflow; the team does not rebuild them.

Manufacturers and distributors with large spec libraries run the sprint as part of B2B SEO services.

Technical SEO decides whether Google reaches a page; on-page SEO decides what that page says.

Technical vs on-page

What is the difference between technical SEO and on-page SEO?

Technical SEO fixes how search engines access a site: crawling, indexing, speed and code. On-page SEO fixes what each page says: titles, headings, content and internal links. Technical work comes first, because on-page changes to an unindexed page earn nothing.

Questions

Questions about technical SEO work

Do you fix technical SEO for WordPress and Shopify sites?

Yes. The fix sprint covers WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Squarespace, Wix and Webflow sites. Platform limits change the fix: Shopify fixes run through theme code and apps, while WordPress fixes run through the theme, plugins and server.

How long does a technical SEO sprint take?

10 business days from kickoff to report. Google then rechecks the fixed URLs: Search Console validation takes up to about 2 weeks, and recrawling takes a few days to a few weeks, according to Google's documentation.

What access do you need to my website?

User access to Google Search Console, your CMS and, for server fixes, your hosting account. You stay the owner of every account; Kansas City SEO Pros is added as a user and removed when the work ends. No passwords are shared by email.
