Google Business Profile categories: primary and additional
A Google Business Profile takes 1 primary category and up to 9 additional categories. The primary category describes the whole business and is the top-weighted factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey; additional categories name distinct lines of work, not every service. Filter the finder below by trade to see the categories that fit 12 common Kansas City business types, with the rule for each choice.

What are the Google Business Profile categories?
Google Business Profile categories are labels from Google’s fixed list that state what a business is, such as "Plumber" or "Dentist." Each profile takes 1 primary category and up to 9 additional categories, and owners cannot create new ones.
A category is not a keyword. Google draws every category from a closed list inside the profile editor, so an owner selects an existing label instead of writing free text. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey scores the primary category 227 points, the single highest-weighted signal of the 187 factors it measures. A grocery store pairs the primary category "Grocery store" with additional categories such as "Bakery" and "Deli" once those departments run as real, staffed lines of business.
Getting the primary category right on day 1 is worth pairing with a full listing build — see GBP optimization for setup, verification and the rest of the profile.
What is the difference between a primary and secondary category?
The primary category describes the business as a whole and is the strongest local pack factor in Whitespark’s 2026 survey. Secondary, or additional, categories name other distinct lines of business, such as "Bakery" for a grocery store that runs one.

What is the best Google Business Profile category for my business?
The best primary category is the most specific category that completes the sentence "This business is a…" for your core work. A nail salon chooses "Nail salon," not "Salon." Additional categories cover other lines of business customers search for separately.
Pick the most specific category that completes "This business is a…"
Use as few categories as possible
Keep services in the services field, not as categories
Match your website's main heading to your primary category.
How do I add categories in Google Business Profile?
Add categories from your Business Profile: select Edit profile, open Business category, set the primary category, then select Add another category for each additional one, up to 9. Category edits go through Google's review and sometimes trigger re-verification.
Open your Business Profile on Google
Select Edit profile
Open Business category
Set the primary category
Select Add another category for each additional one (up to 9)
Is there a full list of Google Business Profile categories?
No. Google publishes no public web page listing every category. The full list appears inside the profile editor as you type, and through the Business Profile API’s category list. Google adds and retires categories, so third-party lists go out of date.
A downloaded or screenshotted list is a snapshot, not a source. Check the primary category inside the live profile editor before every category decision, because the editor is the only place the current list is guaranteed to be accurate.

Home-service trades such as plumbers, roofers and HVAC companies carry the widest primary-category spread on the finder above; the same discipline applies to any Kansas City contractor choosing between a general and a specific trade label — see SEO for home service businesses for the wider profile and website build for that group.
Health-care listings carry the tightest category rules of the twelve: a general dentist's primary category rarely changes, but additional categories such as "Cosmetic dentist" only apply when that service is actually offered and staffed — the same category discipline anchors dental SEO.
Aesthetic and wellness businesses sit in the same health group as dentists on Google's list, and the licensed-staff rule applies just as strictly there; category and compliance work for that group is covered on SEO for aesthetic clinics.
Google Business Profile category questions
Does changing my primary category affect my ranking?
It can. Google lists "what kind of business you are" among the details that help local ranking, and Sterling Sky and other local SEO practitioners observe that a new primary category can change which searches the profile appears for. The edit goes through review and can prompt re-verification.
Do Bing Places categories match Google's?
No. Bing Places uses its own category list, so the closest match is chosen separately on each platform. Keep the business type consistent across Google, Bing and Apple Business even when the labels differ.
Does every service need its own category?
No. Google's guidelines advise choosing the fewest categories it takes to describe the core business. Services belong in the services field; categories name the types of business the company is.
